Two insects can share a colour, a size, and a silhouette and still belong to entirely different families. The names that separate them hang on a handful of small structures — the same details a specialist scans first, often under a hand lens. You don't need the lens to start; you need to know which details carry weight.

Wing veins are a fingerprint

The pattern of veins on a wing is one of the most reliable separators in the insect world. Veins branch and join in arrangements that stay consistent within a group and differ between groups, which is why entomologists lean on them so heavily.

  • Count the major cells — the closed areas bounded by veins.
  • Note whether veins reach the wing margin or stop short.
  • Watch for a thickened or coloured spot near the leading edge, common in dragonflies and some bees.

Antennae tell you the order

Antennae come in a surprising variety, and the shape often pins the broad group before anything else does:

  • Clubbed — a thin shaft that swells at the tip, classic for butterflies.
  • Feathery — wide and plumed, common in many moths.
  • Threadlike — long and even, seen across beetles and others.
  • Elbowed — bent at a sharp joint, the hallmark of ants and some wasps.

Markings: pattern over colour

Colour shifts with light, age, and wear, so treat it as a hint, not proof. The arrangement of markings is steadier:

  • Count spots and note whether they're paired or staggered.
  • Look for bands, and whether they run across or along the body.
  • Check the edges — a clean border versus a fuzzy one can separate look-alikes.

A ladybird with a given count of spots is a useful clue, but the spot layout and the colour of the plate behind the head often matter more than the number alone.

Body proportions and texture

Step back and read the build. Is the body slim and stretched, or compact and round? Is the surface shiny, hairy, or dusted? Hairiness in particular sorts many bee-like and fly-like insects that otherwise look identical at a glance.

Why the app sometimes changes its mind

If two photos of the same insect return different identifications, the features on show changed — not the insect. Lighting, angle, and which structures are visible all shift the read. A blurry top-down frame hides the wing veins and antennae entirely, so the model falls back on coarser cues and may waver.
