Commonly confused insects (and how to tell them apart)
Bee vs. hoverfly, moth vs. butterfly, wasp vs. sawfly — the giveaways that settle it.

Some pairs of insects are confused so often that telling them apart is almost a rite of passage. The good news: each pair has a giveaway — a single feature that settles it once you know where to look. Memorise the giveaways and a whole category of mistakes disappears.
Bee vs. hoverfly
Hoverflies are master mimics, dressed in bee-like stripes for protection, but the disguise breaks under a careful look.
- Wings — a hoverfly has two; a bee has four. This is the cleanest tell.
- Antennae — short and stubby on a hoverfly, longer on a bee.
- Behaviour — hoverflies can hang dead-still in mid-air, a trick few bees manage.
- Eyes — large and fly-like, covering much of the head, on a hoverfly.
Count the wings first; everything else confirms it.
Moth vs. butterfly
The overlap is real, and there are exceptions, but a few features sort the great majority.
- Antennae — clubbed tips point to a butterfly; feathery or threadlike antennae point to a moth.
- Resting posture — butterflies often hold wings upright over the back; many moths rest with wings flat or tented.
- Body build — moths tend to be stouter and furrier; butterflies slimmer.
- When active — many moths fly at night, most butterflies by day, though this isn't absolute.
Wasp vs. sawfly
Both are slender and often boldly marked, but their middles differ.
- Waist — a wasp has a pinched, narrow waist; a sawfly's body runs broad and continuous, with no obvious pinch.
- Antennae and wings repay a closer look, but the waist is the quick answer.
Dragonfly vs. damselfly
Close cousins, easily mixed up near water.
- Wings at rest — a dragonfly holds them spread flat; a damselfly usually folds them along the body.
- Eyes — a dragonfly's huge eyes nearly touch; a damselfly's are set apart, one on each side.
- Build — dragonflies are bulkier; damselflies thin and delicate.
Beetle vs. true bug
- Front wings — a beetle's are hardened and meet in a straight line down the back; a true bug's often form a partial "X" or triangle pattern.
- Mouthparts — beetles chew; true bugs pierce and suck through a beak, visible in a close shot.
